Located in the province of Guanacaste, this is a typical Costa Rican sabanero town (savannah town), or for the tourist a typical Costa Rican cattle town. Many families here make a living from cattle ranching. Access to the pastures of the Guanacaste sabanera zone makes Limonal a town where cattle are an important source of commerce.
The village is located on the Interamericana Highway.
Since the Puente de la Amistad was completed in 2004 this village has gained importance as a traffic hub. Many travelers with one of the beaches on the Nicoya Peninsula as their destination leave the Interamericana here.
Tourist buses stop in Limonal so their passengers can buy snacks or switch buses. Buses leave from here in the direction of Liberia, San Jose and Nicoya.
