Ciudad Quesada is also known as San Carlos, it is the capital of the canton of San Carlos. The town is an important travel hub and starting point of excursions to Juan Castro Blanco National Park. Ciudad Quesada is located in Alajuela province, 95 kilometers north of San Jose. This small but growing city is an important center for business in the area. In April the local farmers market takes place, where cattle and oxen are sold. It's one of the biggest in Costa Rica. The typical horse parade "Tope" is of course part of this festivity. Local crafts are sold at the souvenir shops. There are also assorted saddle makers in Ciudad Quesada that fabricate and sell artfully decorated saddles.
The city of San Carlos is not a main tourist destination, but it has all the facilities to lodge any type of tourist. On the way from San Jose one can make a detour to Quesada, it is just off the main route. In contrast to La Fortuna this town is still very undeveloped for tourists.
Hot thermal springs are located close to this rural town. With its fresh clean air and spectacular hillsides a visit to this city is a great way to escape the hustle of city life.
