Montezuma - Costa Rica

The village of Montezuma Beach is located on the Nicoya Peninsula, in the province Puntarenas. The village was founded by dropouts and freaks, mostly backpackers who visited Montezuma Beach. The beach town is not popular among all Costa Ricans.

Besides some upscale hotel rooms it is possible to get very low budget accommodations, some of them directly on the ocean. Others are located directly above the disco, which doesn't seem to bother the partying tourists.

Opening hours of stores, bars and cafes depends strongly on the mood of their owners. Everything is very laid back and relaxed in Montezuma Beach. There are parties every night in the discos in town.

The beach at Montezuma Beach is white sand and some of the hotels can only be reached on foot over the beach.

There are some strong currents, but some areas are protected by big rocks and good for swimming. There are trails to waterfalls with a swimming hole.

The meeting point for backpackers...

The Nature Reserve Cabo Blanco on the tip of the Nicoya Peninsula is not far away. It can be reached by car, taxi or with an organized tour from Montezuma Beach. In town bicycles and kayaks are rented. Horseback tours with gorgeous rides on the beach are also available.

For snorkeling a trip to Isla Tortuga is recommended, it takes 90 minutes by boat. The beach at Isla Tortuga is one of the most beautiful in all of Central America.
