San Ramon - Costa Rica

San Ramon is well known for its farmers market (Feria del Agrucultor) every Saturday where buyers show up even from San Jose.

Many of the locals live from cultivating coffee and sugar cane.

The most famous descendent of San Ramon is, without a doubt, Jose Maria Figueres Ferrer, the three time president of Costa Rica. His birth place in San Ramon now is a museum. He is the founder of the PLN (Partido de Liberacion Liberal) party, one of the two major parties in Costa Rica. Don Pepe, the name he is called by many Costa Ricans, is responsible for many reforms that are part of the new constitution. One of the most important reforms was the abolition of the military in Costa Rica. He gave women and blacks equal rights in Costa Rica.

The village church has an interesting history. The church was built in Germany, shipped to Costa Rica and assembled in San Ramon.

The regional museum is in the same part of town, it contains information about the region. Students from the University of Costa Rica (UCR) supervise the museum. The university has a small campus in San Ramon.

The town is also the center of the Costa Rican cigar production where there are several cigar factories. Day trips can be arranged from the capital and many other towns to San Ramon. Cigar lovers can roll their own cigar during a guided cigar tour.
