The black-grey sandy beach of Ocotal Beach is bordered by craggy cliffs on both sides. At low tide some tide pools accumulate in the cliffs. Only 1 kilometer out from the beach the diving spot Las Corridas offers excellent diving conditions. This is a good place to observe seahorses, marlin and other tropical fish on the coral reef. Dolphins often swim beside boats that cruise off the beach. Between December and April Humpback and Pilot Whales frequent these waters.
For divers Ocotal is a good central location because both the Catalina Islands and Bat Island (Isla Murcielagos) are only a short distance away. These are dive spots with impressive marine life. Bull Sharks, Giant Manta Rays, Golden Rays, Eagle Rays, Devil Rays and many other exotic fish can be observed here. Beginners can participate in a PADI scuba diving course at one of the local dive schools.
Sport fishing is also very popular in Ocotal and it is possible to fish all year around here. Catches include Sailfish, Marlin, Roosterfish, Mahi Mahi, Yellowfin Tuna and Amberjack.
Sailfish are best caught between April and September, Marlin between December and March, Mahi Mahi between April and November, Yellowfin Tuna between May and November and Roosterfish and Amberjack year around.
Sport fishing is widely popular in the waters off Costa Rica and offers an unforgettable experience.
