Siquirres - Costa Rica

Siquirres is the capital of the canton of Siquirres. The province of Limon consists of 6 cantons: Guacimo, Limon, Matina, Pococi, Siquirres and Talamanca. Those cantons are further divided into districts.

In the past trains traveled from Alajuela through Siquirres to Limon. The heavy earthquake in 1991 severely damaged the rails and since then this railroad connection is out of service.

The old highway that comes from Turrialba connects in Siquirres with the new one from San Jose. In the past only the route from Turrialba to Limon existed. The Highway 32 is driven a lot by big trucks that deliver supplies or pick up materials in this Caribbean port. This is the most important port in Costa Rica. More exports and imports go through this port than the port of Caldera on the Pacific side.

A big part of the local population is dark skinned. Siquirres is situated close to the rivers Pacuare and Reventazon. The rivers are well known among rafters and kayakers. Due to the magnificent natural geography this inland Caribbean town has begun to embrace tourism. It is a valuable tourist location since it is close to a number of tourist attractions and serves as an access point to the massive Tortugero National Park, a few hours away.

On the route to the Caribbean...

The architecture of the church in Siquirres is an anomaly and is a contrast to all other churches in Costa Rica, it is round.
